Route Map

Day by day

Every day here is private — your own guide and your own vehicle — so the order holds but the hours are yours to move.

Day 1 01

Arrival in Arusha

You are met at Kilimanjaro International Airport and driven to Kahawa House in Arusha.

An evening to get over the flight before the safari begins.

Day 2 02

Fly to the Northern Serengeti

After breakfast you transfer to Arusha Airport for the flight north. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and the drive to Nimali Mara is your first game drive.

The north is open plain, rocky kopjes, valleys and woodland. The migration is far to the south at this time of year, which leaves the resident game and a great deal of space.

Day 3 03

The Northern Serengeti

A full day in the north, for the north’s own sake rather than for the herds: the kopjes, the valleys and the woodland, and the animals that live there all year.

With fewer vehicles about outside the migration months, sightings tend to be unhurried, and there is time to stop, watch and photograph without moving on to the next one.

Day 4 04

A morning game drive in the north, then south through the park, the country changing around you as you go.

The drive continues as a game drive across the central plains and kopjes, and ends at Meliá Serengeti Lodge.

Day 5 05

Central Serengeti to Ndutu

After breakfast, a game drive south across the central Serengeti towards the Ndutu plains, where the herds gather for the calving between December and March.

You arrive at Safari Haven Migration Camp, and the afternoon is a game drive around Ndutu.

Day 6 06

A Full Day on the Calving Grounds

The whole day goes to the calving. The southern plains become a nursery as the wildebeest give birth, and the young draw the predators in.

You take a picnic lunch rather than coming back to camp at midday, so the hours go on the herds, the calves and whatever is hunting them.

Day 7 07

The Ngorongoro Crater

You leave Ndutu after breakfast for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and go down onto the crater floor, where elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo and, with luck, the black rhino live in one of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere.

After the crater, on to Elephant Springs for the night.

Day 9 09

Tarangire, Shanga & Departure

An early game drive in Tarangire, while the animals are active and the park is still quiet, then breakfast and the road towards Arusha.

Then Kilimanjaro International Airport and your onward flight.

FAQs

Why start in the northern Serengeti?
Because between December and March you get two different Serengetis on one trip: the north, empty of the migration and full of space and resident game, and then the calving in the south. The north is often better value at this time of year too.
Will we see the migration?
From December to March the herds gather around Ndutu for the calving, and this itinerary spends two nights there. Wildlife moves with the rain, so nobody can guarantee a sighting.
Is it a good safari for photographers?
Yes — newborn animals and the predators around them, big open landscapes and big skies, and a private vehicle that stops for as long as you want it to.
Is this a private safari?
Yes. The vehicle, the guide and the itinerary are yours alone — you share the day with nobody outside your own party.
Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. Because it is private, the nights, the lodges, the activities and the pace can all move. Tell us what you have in mind and we will redraft it.
